The Only Tablet You Need: Simple Water Safety for Your Tank and Well at Home!

img_2823

We rely on our storage tanks, wells, and boreholes every day for life.

However, after heavy rains or long periods of use, this essential water can easily hide bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

The good news? You can easily and affordably disinfect all your water using one simple product: the small chlorine tablets (NaDCC 67 mg) found everywhere.

Let’s learn how to use these tablets correctly to keep your whole family safe.

Why You Need This Tablet: The Risk in Your Water

We must disinfect because even clear water can contain unwanted guests like bacteria (typhoid, cholera) and viruses.

Wells and tanks collect soil and organic matter, creating a perfect environment for these germs to grow.

Disinfecting ensures your water is safe for drinking, cooking, and every other household use.

  • Rule of Thumb: One small 67 mg tablet safely treats 20–25 litres of drinking water.

1. Daily Safety and Tank Maintenance (1,000 L)

To keep your drinking water safe, use 1 tablet for every 20-25 litres of water drawn from the tap.

For your main storage tank, routine disinfection is straightforward.

Tank Size Tablets (67 mg NaDCC) Wait Time
1,000 L Tank 40 to 50 tablets 30 minutes
5,000 L Tank 200 to 250 tablets 30 minutes

After adding the dose, ensure the water mixes well and wait the required time.

The water should have a very SLIGHT chlorine smell to confirm it worked.

2. Shocking Your Well (The Big Clean)

Wells and boreholes need a much higher dose because they contain organic matter and biofilm that chlorine must overcome.

We recommend treating your well every few months, especially after heavy rain or pump repairs.

Let’s look at a common example: treating a 15,000-litre well.

Dosing Your 15,000 L Well (Using 67 mg Tablets)

  • For Standard Cleaning: Use 300–375 tablets.
  • For Shock Chlorination (if water is smelly/muddy): Use 450–600 tablets.

How to Apply the Tablets Safely

  1. Put your calculated dose (e.g., 400 tablets) into a clean bucket with some water to help them dissolve quickly.
  2. Pour the dissolved mixture evenly around the opening of the well.
  3. Run the pump, stir the well, or fetch and return water for 10 minutes to circulate the chlorine throughout the whole system.
  4. Wait Overnight (8–12 hours) before drawing water for use.
  5. If the smell is too strong in the morning, pump water for 5–10 minutes until the smell is mild.

When was the last time you checked your well? Don’t wait for the water to start smelling!

Safety Tip: Chlorine is a Strong Chemical!

Always store chlorine tablets in a cool, dry place, far away from children.

Never mix these tablets with any other chemicals or cleaners.

If your water is very muddy, filter it through a clean cloth or sand filter before adding the tablets.

Remember: The slight chlorine smell means the water is safe; no smell means you should add a little more.
