Ultrasound Transmission Gel is an essential medical consumable used in diagnostic and therapeutic imaging. Its primary function is to eliminate the air interface between the ultrasound transducer and the patient’s skin, thereby ensuring optimal acoustic coupling. This is non-negotiable for producing clear diagnostic images and ensuring the effectiveness of therapeutic ultrasound waves. The availability of diverse volumes, particularly the large 5 Litre bulk package, makes this an indispensable, cost-effective product for busy hospitals and maternal health clinics across Tanzania and East Africa.

Available Volumes/Sizes

This product is supplied in two standard volumes to accommodate different clinical needs:

  • 500 ml Dispenser Bottle: Ideal for point-of-care use, small clinics, and easy application during examinations. Offers hygienic, convenient dispensing.
  • 5 Litre Bulk Package: Designed for high-volume users like hospital radiology departments. Provides the most cost-effective solution, refilling 500 ml dispensers as needed.
Main Intended Uses (Indications)
  • Diagnostic Ultrasound: Used for imaging organs, fetal monitoring (OBGYN), and musculoskeletal assessments [attachment_0](attachment).
  • Therapeutic Ultrasound: Ensures efficient energy transfer for physical therapy treatments.
  • ECG/EEG Procedures: May be used as a general conductive agent in electrophysiology procedures.
Operating Instructions (Itemized with setup/operation/maintenance)
  1. Application: Apply a liberal amount of gel to the patient’s skin in the examination area or directly onto the face of the transducer probe.
  2. Procedure: Ensure no air bubbles are trapped between the probe and the gel layer during use.
  3. Cleanup: Immediately wipe excess gel from the patient and the probe using a soft cloth or tissue. The gel is water-soluble and easily removed.
  4. Refilling (5 Litre Pack): Use a clean, sterilized container or funnel to hygienically transfer gel from the bulk package into the 500 ml dispenser bottles.
Potential Risks and Adverse Events

The gel is formulated to be hypoallergenic, non-staining, and non-greasy. Potential risks are limited to rare instances of mild localized skin irritation or allergic sensitivity to the preservative agents used in the formula.

Warnings/Precautions
  • External Use Only: Do not ingest. Avoid contact with eyes.
  • Hygiene: Although non-sterile, proper infection control dictates that the probe and skin must be clean before and after use. Never reuse gel.
  • Storage: Store at room temperature. Extreme heat or cold may alter the gel’s viscosity and acoustic properties, compromising performance.

Product Type Medical Consumable
Volume Options 500 ml & 5 Litres
Composition Water-Soluble Hydrogel, High Viscosity
Mechanism Acoustic Coupling Medium
Cleanup Non-staining, Wipes Clean
Mechanism of Operation

The gel’s function is rooted in physics. Sound energy (ultrasound) cannot travel efficiently through air; even microscopic air gaps between the transducer’s surface and the skin result in signal loss and poor image quality. The gel’s specialized, high-viscosity, water-based polymer structure provides an acoustic bridge, acting as an impedance-matching material. It ensures nearly 100% sound wave transmission from the piezoelectric crystal within the transducer, into the body, and back, which is essential for accurate diagnostics.
