Product description

Product Name Detailed Description
Elbow Crutches Pair Open Arm – Height Adjustable These open-arm elbow crutches provide mobility support for individuals with lower limb injuries or conditions. Their design is especially useful in settings like Tanzania, where flexibility and durability are needed for uneven terrain.
Available Models/Sizes/Variations
Typically sold as a pair (left and right). The crutches use an open arm cuff (i.e. semi-cuff rather than full enclosed cuff). The shafts are telescopic and height-adjustable via push-pin or locking clip mechanisms. Adjustment range often from ~ 80 cm to ~ 110-120 cm (model dependent). Cushioned hand grips and non-slip rubber tips are standard. Some models may offer dual adjustment (grip to cuff, cuff to shaft).
Main Intended Uses
• Assist walking for users recovering from fractures, sprains, or lower limb surgery.

• Provide support for users requiring partial weight bearing or stability.

• Useful for general mobility over indoor and outdoor terrain, including paths, paved and unpaved ground in Tanzania.
Operating Instructions (Setup / Use / Maintenance)
With shoes on, have user stand upright; measure from floor to elbow crease, then subtract ~ 2–3 cm to determine correct height.
Unlock the push-pin/clip, slide shaft to desired height, re-lock securely.
Ensure both crutches are set to equal height.
Position crutches slightly ahead when walking; shift body weight through arms and cuffs; move the weaker leg forward, then the stronger.
Inspect rubber tips regularly; replace when worn to maintain traction.
Clean shafts and locking mechanisms periodically, especially after use in dusty or muddy environments. Lubricate lightly as needed.
Before each use, check that locks are secure and crutches are stable.
Potential Risks / Adverse Events
• Slipping on smooth or wet surfaces if rubber tips are worn.

• Loosening or failure of locking pin/clip may lead to collapse or misalignment.

• Pressure or discomfort in the forearm, wrist, or hand if not well fitted.

• Fatigue or overuse strain in arms, shoulders, wrists during prolonged use.
Interactions / Compatibility
• Compatible with replacement rubber tips (“ferrules”) of matching diameter.

• Can be used alongside leg braces, casts, or orthopedic supports.

• Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or solvents that might degrade metals or coatings.
Warnings / Precautions
• Do not exceed the maximum weight load specified by manufacturer (commonly ~ 100–130 kg, model dependent).

• Always ensure locking mechanisms are fully engaged before placing weight.

• Avoid tilting crutches or overreaching — maintain upright posture.

• On wet, muddy, or uneven surfaces (common in many parts of Tanzania), use caution and ensure tips are in good condition.

• Prevent ingress of dirt/sand into adjustment mechanisms by cleaning and drying periodically.
Quick Device Facts Table

Mechanism of Operation
The crutches channel part of the user’s weight through the forearm cuff and the hand grip. The open cuff surrounds the forearm laterally, giving lateral support but allowing some freedom of movement. The telescopic shaft can be locked to fit the user’s height. The rubber tip interfaces with the ground to provide grip and dampen shock. Essentially, the crutch acts as a structural support transferring load from the leg to the upper limb and ground, allowing ambulation with reduced or no weight on the impaired leg.
