Auxiliary Crutches Pair – Height Adjustable These auxiliary crutches are mobility aids designed to support individuals with temporary or long-term lower limb impairment. They are especially useful in African settings where terrain can be uneven and accessible mobility devices are essential.
Available Models/Sizes/Variations
Usually sold as a pair (left & right). Frame material is lightweight aluminium alloy. Available sizes: Small, Medium, Large; height adjustable via push-pin or clip locking mechanism typically from ~ 90 cm up to ~ 130-140 cm depending on size. Hand grips and under-arm pads often cushioned; rubber, non-slip tips fitted.
Main Uses/Indications
• For support during recovery from leg fractures, sprains, or surgery.
• For partial or non-weight bearing walking, or when one leg needs assistance.
• For mobility during daily activities in homes, clinics, and outdoor environment (paths, uneven ground).
Usage Instructions
- Stand upright with shoes on. Measure distance from floor to under-arm (axilla) minus ~ 2–3 cm to set correct height.
- Set hand grips so elbows bend about 15-30° when holding grip with arms relaxed.
- Adjust both crutches to equal height using push-pin or clip lock; ensure locking mechanism is secure.
- Place crutches slightly ahead and to side when walking; lean through arms; step with weaker leg forward then stronger leg.
- Check rubber tips regularly; replace when worn.
- Store in dry place; wipe down after muddy/wet use; inspect for loose components or fatigue in frame.
Side Effects / Potential Risks
• Discomfort or bruising under arms (axilla) if padding insufficient or height set too high.
• Hand, wrist or shoulder strain if crutches too low/high or badly fitted.
• Risk of slipping on wet or smooth surfaces if rubber tips are worn.
• Mechanical failure of locking mechanism if loose or poorly maintained.
Interactions / Compatibility
• Compatible with replacement rubber tips/ferrules.
• Can be used in combination with leg braces or casts.
• Not recommended on very steep inclines or slippery surfaces unless with proper footwear and stable surface.
Warnings / Precautions
• Do not exceed maximum weight load specified by manufacturer (often around 100-130 kg depending on model).
• Always ensure locking pins or clips are engaged before putting weight.
• Avoid resting under-arm pads during long usage to prevent nerve compression (adjust usage, use arm pads correctly).
• In regions with rain/mud/dust (like many places in Tanzania), keep the adjustment mechanisms clean and dry to prevent rust or jamming.
• Inspect rubber tips and replace when worn to avoid slips.

Mechanism of Operation
The crutches work by transferring weight from the user’s lower limbs into the arms, hands and under-arm area. The under-arm pads (axillary portion) help distribute load and provide stability under the armpits. The hand grips allow the user to push through the arms and maintain forward propulsion. The telescoping shaft (adjustable via pin or clamp) allows fitting to user height. The rubber tips at the base provide traction and dampen impact, reducing slipping and ensuring contact with the ground.
