Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by raised, itchy welts (wheals) that can appear anywhere on the body. These welts are often red or skin-colored and can vary in size and shape, typically disappearing within 24 hours but new ones may appear. Chronic urticaria refers to hives that persist for more than six weeks, often without an identifiable cause. Triggers can include allergens, medications, stress, or physical stimuli, and treatment typically involves antihistamines and identifying triggers.
